Newcastle’s Abbi Thurman Athlete Spotlight – Presented by First National Bank and Trust of Newcastle


Abbi Thurman is a varsity cheerleader at Newcastle High School and one of the seniors on
the squad. Thurman said this group of grown up together and are looking forward to
competing at state in Class 5A.
” I love all of these girls so much. The seniors this year have all grown up together since we
were in elementary school. We love and support each other, and all want what is best for
each other. I’m also very excited to see what the younger girls are able to accomplish in the
future. They are so talented,” said Thurman.


Abbi started her journey into cheer when she was six years old. It started at a competitive
gym called Reign. From there, it was on to cheering for the school at every level.
“Being a cheerleader to me means being a great representative of your school and
teammates. Cheer has taught me so many valuable things, like hard work and dedication,”
said Thurman.
The senior said her parents have been a big influence in her life and she is grateful for their
commitment to her and her activities.
“My biggest influences in my life have been my parents. They have always supported me,
even if it means going all over the country every weekend for a cheer competition. They
always put others before themselves and would do anything to help anyone out. They
always make me, and my brother feel loved and important, and I appreciate them more
than they will ever know,” said Thurman.
In the classroom, Thurman said she enjoys math because there is only one right answer. In
her free time, she enjoys going to the lake, reading and hanging out with friends. As for her
future plans?
“After graduation I plan to attend the OU Health Science Center to become a Sonographer,”
Thurman said.
