BLANCHARD LIONS
Coach: LANCE MANNING
9-2
OFFENSE
The expectations at Blanchard remain the same under head coach Lance Manning. “The players have really good football IQ. Play hard, physical and know how to win. We’ll have a chance to have a good football team if we can stay healthy,” said coach Manning. This mantra is nothing new to the player at BHS. Quarterback Noah Smith (6-3, 200, Jr.) completed 49 or 100 pass attempts for 990 yards and 10 touchdowns. Smith will run the spread offense for the Lions and bounce into the 2-back gun when needed. Look for Smith to be an up-tempo guy who can get the ball into all quadrants of the field. Protecting Smith is Brayden Heffernan (6-4, 290, Sr.) at tackle. Heffernan will need to help some of the younger linemen mature into their roles as starters. Another player making some noise is Cole Watkins (6-3, 215, Sr.). As a junior Watkins caught 19 passes for 386 yards and three touchdowns. He has great instincts and makes plays in space. Watkins is a true match-up problem for opposing defenses. Also look for Jett Holland (6-2, 185, Fr.) who showed excellent hands and the ability to block in space at team camp.
DEFENSE
Expect to see the Lions in their 3-4 scheme again this season. Coach Manning will ask his defense to mix in some zone coverage and a few 4-man fronts. Watkins will play a big role on the defensive side as an outside linebacker. Last season he made 76 total tackles as a junior and is recruiting is picking up. A few holes are being filled during team camp and preseason practice. Look for Christian Young to find his way onto the field and help the Lions on both sides of the ball. The coaching staff includes Carson Smith – ILB/DC, Kirk Kirchner – OLB, Adam Wayland – DL, Bryan Weaver – Safeties, Riley Lowrey – Corners, Chaz Mattocks – OL, and Chris Cook – Receivers.
