When Blanchard High School’s Denver Ballard was in the seventh grade, she decided to give cheer a try. Already familiar with cheer, Ballard had a tumbling background making cheer the next logical step.
“I started cheer in seventh grade. I did gymnastics before, but then quit to be able to focus on cheer only instead,” said Ballard.
Now a senior, Ballard said being part of the BHS cheer team is special and as an upperclassman, she has enjoyed helping the younger team members this season.
“What I love most about my team and teammates this year is how supportive everyone is. We’re always pushing each other to do our best and encourage each other when it’s hard,” Ballard said. “My biggest surprise this season has been seeing how well our team has picked up on new things. we have a lot of underclassmen and new people this year, and they have all stepped up a lot and proved people wrong. Since I’m one of the most experienced bases I try to be reliable and help others. I try to encourage everyone and be a good teammate.”

Ballard said her coaches are a source of inspiration.
“Both my teammates and coaches inspire me. they’re always pushing me to be my best. I know they both believe in me and remind me why I love being part of this team.”
Ballard and her sister could be the two most vocal people on the team. And they like to keep everyone laughing and having fun.
“Honestly, I think it’s between me and my twin sister, we’re both pretty loud in practice and we like to joke, but not in a way that’s too distracting,” said Ballard.
In the classroom, Ballard said she enjoys English the most, but picking out a favorite teacher was a more difficult task.
“My favorite subject in school has always been English, but my favorite teacher was my junior year history teacher Mrs. Woods. She’s genuinely caring and makes everyone feel valued,” said Ballard.
Away from sports, you can usually find Ballard hanging out with friends and family, listening to podcasts and music, reading, and going shopping. The senior has big plans for life after high school.
“After I graduate, I would like to attend the University of Oklahoma and major in nursing,” said Ballard.
