Blanchard’s Ava Smalley
For Blanchard High School senior Ava Smalley, cheerleading is built on trust, perseverance and celebrating success alongside the teammates who make every achievement possible.
A varsity cheerleader for the Lady Lions, Smalley serves as a back spot, a role that demands focus, communication and confidence in the athletes around her.
“I am most proud of my team for winning STUNT State three years in a row! That is also my favorite memory, just getting to celebrate with my team!” Smalley said.
That championship tradition represents more than a trophy for Smalley. It reflects the work, unity and resilience required from a team competing at a high level.
“My sport has taught me to never give up! I have struggled throughout cheer with mental blocks, and after working hard and not giving up I have been able to overcome it!” Smalley said.
That mindset extends beyond the mat. Smalley said the best advice she has received is to focus on the present rather than becoming overwhelmed by everything ahead.
“The best advice anyone has given me is to take each day one step at a time. It’s easy to feel like you have so much to do or get done but ultimately you have to go one step at a time, and it will get done,” Smalley said.
She credits her older brother with showing her what dedication can accomplish. Smalley also recognizes teammate Meg Varner for the influence she has had on the Lady Lions.
“Meg Varner has left the biggest impression on me! She is a massive vocal leader on our team and is always pushing our team to do the best we can!” Smalley said.
Outside of cheer, Smalley appreciates the lasting support of teacher Amber Wright, whom she first had in third grade before Wright later taught her again as a junior at Blanchard.
“First, I want to thank my parents for always pushing me to be the best version of myself! And also, anyone else in my family for being my biggest supporters through my whole life!” Smalley said.
